» Mohammad Kamrani, another Casualty of the Election Violence

Eighteen-year old Mohammad Kamrani who was hit with a bullet during a peaceful protest march against the electoral coup in Tehran, died on July 16, 2009 and his body was buried last Saturday at Tehran’s Behesht Zahra cemetery.
While official statistics of the number of dead since the June 12 coup stands at 20 people, human rights groups have announced that the real number of dead during the unrest is much higher that what the Islamic republic has announced. Kamrani’s body was buried next to another young man’s body, Sohrab Arabi, who was also killed during the unrest following the massive protests to the announced results of the June 12 presidential election. Arabi too was shot dead by a Basijee vigilante member while participating in a peaceful march. Before these two, the body of 27 year old Neda Agha Soltan and that of Yaghoob Borvaie, a graduate student at Tehran university were given to their family members.
In a related report published in Amir Kabir University’s newsletter, Kianoosh Asa, a Kermanshahi graduate student of chemistry from Science and Technology University was also killed by security forces on June 15, 2009. Officials have demanded 5 to 14 million Toman (about $5,000 to 14,000) from the families of the dead for each body as ‘bullet money’. These family members have also had to sign in undertakings that they would not suit security forces for the death of their killed family members. Last week, the people of Mashhad buried the body of Mostafa Ghanian, another student, under the watchful eyes of security forces.
These are only the names of some of the martyrs that may be tracked from official sources. Because of the heavy security and military atmosphere dominating the country and the threats by the coup government against family members who have lost a member, exact numbers for those that have died in the recent post-election crises are impossible to obtain and the only signs of the dead emerge when a burial takes place.
