» Oppression Has Not Thwarted Green Movement’s Growth

While the political behavior of Islamic republic officials has captured the international and domestic spotlight, and as news about pressure on journalists and political activists has been spreading, Mir-Hossein Mousavi spoke to reporters about his views on government measures and actions. “If you (the Iranian government) claim that the government is the servant and the people are the masters, [then know that] a servant does not kill his master; does not harm him; does not put him in prison; does not limit him and does not claim his own wishes as the people’s demands,” he said.

Meeting with members of the Mojahedin Enghelab Eslami’s student committee, Mir-Hossein Mousavi added, “We no longer need to look far or do complex analysis to show the reasons behind this situation. All we need to do is to look at the prisons and see how many of the caring men and women of this country, journalists and competent figures have been imprisoned with baseless accusations. The “forced confession” project has been started again. Now some of these political prisoners are on leave on bail but they are under pressure that if they don’t want to go back to prison they should do [staged] interviews and this is while the independent and free media are also contentiously under pressure.”

Criticizing the “administration and judiciary’s illegal” acts in banning newspapers and media, he said, “I don’t see any [positive] forecast for the freedom of press and media such that was indicated in the constitution; therefore the supporters of the Green Movement should adapt to this situation and even in this hard condition find ways to expand information and strengthen the [free] media. Above that today we all should be a media in our workplaces and homes.”

Emphasizing his prior suggestions for ways to end the crisis, Mousavi added, “He added: “We are saying that we were supposed to have a merciful interpretation of Islam that would extend the shade of kindness and tolerance over our country, not to have anti-religious actions, forced confessions, the crimes of Kahrizak prison and student dormitories, as well as the tragedies that happened during peaceful protests. We are still saying that the solution to the problems is not in manipulating the number of martyrs or filling up the prisons, but rather the solution is in taking care of the families of martyrs, opening the prison doors, giving freedom to pre ss and having free, competing and not pre-selected elections.”

Mousavi emphasized, “Repressions could not stop the Green path and the reason that all these pressure and arrests were not able to stop the Green Movement of the people is in the very key slogan of the people which says “We Are Countless”. This is a very important slogan. There are three and half millions students in universities, a majority of whom know that they path to prosperity of the country is the spread of Green waves of knowledge and responsibility among the millions of public. Students are children of people and so far have done a great job informing and enlightening [the public].”
