National Unity Plan Revived?
» Mir-Hossein Mousavi’s Candidacy More Likely
In this connection, Ali Akbar Nateq-Nouri recently announced in an interview with Etemad Melli’s weekly journal that it was necessary for moderate forces from both camps to unite and elect a person who is acceptable to the country’s Supreme Leader and tolerated by all political camps.
Nateq-Nouri emphasized, “I believe that a moderate Principalist (the hardline ideologues) figure who is both acceptable to the Supreme Leader and tolerated by other factions should become the next president. Such a person can govern the nation.”
These remarks are publicized at a time when the chances of Mohammad Khatami’s candidacy have seriously declined. In his latest remark Khatami noted that “If one is not allowed to work, one must not come,” strengthening the possibility of candidacy of other reformist choices, such as Mir Hossein Mousavi.
In a related reaction last week the Jomhouri Eslami newspaper, whose first editor-in-chief and one of the initial founders was Mir Hossein Mousavi announced that the last prime minister of the Islamic Republic will speak about the country’s issues in the coming weeks.
Actions by Mir Hossein’s Supporters
When news agencies announced that the “Unity and Cooperation Society,” which is composed of individuals affiliated with Mir Hossein Mousavi, intends to hold a meeting at the end of this month with members and prominent figures of various political camps, many political analysis concluded that the possibility of candidacy of Iran’s prime minister in the war years has increased more than ever before.
The group had announced earlier that it was preparing a comprehensive report on the thirty-year experience of the 1979 revolution. In this connection, ILNA news agency reported that the above-mentioned meeting with members and prominent figures of various political camps will be held and quoted an informed source as saying that Mir Hossein Mousavi, seyed Mohammad Khatami, Ali Akbar Nateq-Nouri and other prominent regime figures would be present at the meeting, which would be inaugurated by seyed Hassan Khomeini.
The website “Kalameh,” which supports Mir Hossein Mousavi, published a report titled, “Will Mir Hossein Mousavi Form a National Unity Government?” discussing this issue, noting, “The welcoming and optimism of various political factions and camps in support of Mir Hossein Mousavi’s candidacy in the election reveals Mir Hossein’s significant potential in creating unity in the nation.”
This report discusses the positive attitude surrounding Mir Hossein Mousavi’s return to politics and reported that figures from the various reformists and conservative camps have welcomed Mir Hossein Mousavi’s candidacy in previous weeks.
