ماه‌هاست مقامات ارشد ایرانی بصورت تاکتیکی تصدیق می‌کنند که زندانی شدن جیسون رضاییان، خبرنگار واشنگتن پست در تهران غیرعادلانه است. محمدجواد لاریجانی، دبیر شورای حقوق بشر ایران آن‌را مایه آبروریزی خواند و اوائل ماه نوامبر ابراز امیدواری کرد این پرونده در مدت کمتر از یک ماه بسته شود. محمدجواد ظریف، وزیر امور خارجه ایران در ماه دسامبر گفت، می‌داند که آقای رضاییان یک خبرنگار منصف است و ابراز امیدواری کرد که مدت بازداشت او کوتاه باشد.
به این ترتیب بسیار مایه تعجب است که آقای رضاییان روز شنبه در تهران تفهیم اتهام شد. ماهیت اتهامات فاش نشده و همچنین مقامات ایران هیچ شواهدی را علیه او بصورت علنی ارائه نکرده‌اند. او تا روز دوشنبه، ۱۳۹ روز است که در بازداشت بسر می‌برد، بیش از هر خبرنگار غربی که تابه‌حال در ایران بازداشت بوده است.
همانطور که خانواده آقای رضاییان و وزارت خارجه آمریکا گفته‌اند، شرایط بازداشت او ناقض قوانین خود ایران است. او به وکیل و وثیقه دسترسی ندارد. به جز همسرش که او نیز ۲۲ ژوئیه بازداشت و اوایل اکتبر آزاد شد، به کسی اجازه ملاقات نداده‌اند. شرایط جسمانی و روانی او خوب نیست. خانواده‌اش می‌گویند فشار خون، عارضه چشمی و کمردرد دارد.
همانطور که مارتین بارون، دبیر اجرایی واشنگتن پست گفته است، آقای رضاییان اصلا از اول هم هرگز نباید بازداشت و زندانی می‌شد. آقای رضاییان که تابعیت دوگانه ایرانی-آمریکایی دارد به عنوان خبرنگار به ایران بازگشت تا درک بین دو کشور را افزایش دهد. از سال ۲۰۱۲ نه تنها در مورد مسایل سیاسی، بلکه درباره مسایل اجتماعی و فرهنگی، از جمله علاقه ایرانی‌ها به بیسبال گزارش تهیه کرده است.
جان کری وزیر امور خارجه آمریکا روز یکشنبه در بیانیه‌ای گفت: “جیسون هیچ تهدیدی برای دولت ایران یا امنیت ملی این کشور ایجاد نمی‌کند.” هاله اسفندیاری، محقق ایرانی آمریکایی مقیم واشنگتن، که سال ۲۰۰۷ در ایران زندانی بود، هفته گذشته اشاره کرد، این واقعیت که آقای رضاییان این همه وقت بدون اتهام بازداشت بوده نشان می‌دهد که وزارت اطلاعات ایران تلاش می‌کند پرونده‌ای برای او دست وپا کند که حتی در دادگاه‌های ایران هم قابل ارائه باشد.
آقای کری گفت: “شخصا از گزارش‌ها ناامید و آزرده شده‌ام و به تکرار موضوع جیسون را مستقیما با مقامات ایران مطرح کرده‌ام.” آقای کری روز یکشنبه بصورت جداگانه در کنفرانسی گفت، توافق با ایران بر سر برنامه هسته‌ای می‌تواند ظرف مدت سه یا چهار ماه بدست آید. این برآورد با توجه به پرونده آقای رضاییان و خرید تجهیزات برای راکتور هسته‌ای توسط ایران منافات دارد. اگر مقامات ایران در مورد پرونده آقای رضاییان غیرمسئولانه رفتار می‌کنند، چطور می‌توان انتظار داشت به تعهدات خود در رابطه با برنامه هسته‌ای پایبند باشند؟
