آمار روز جمعه اوپک نشان داد که بر اثر تحریم‌های نفتی علیه ایران، صادرات نفتی این کشور در دو سال گذشته تقریبا نصف شده است.
ایران در حال گفتگو با شش قدرت بین‌المللی بر سر برنامه هسته‌ای مناقشه‌برانگیز خود است. به رغم امضای توافق اولیه در ماه نوامبر، طرفین نتوانسته‌اند پیشرفت زیادی بکنند و اقتصاد ایران در تنگنا باقی مانده است.
سازمان کشورهای صادرکننده نفت (اوپک) در گزارش سالانه خود می‌گوید، درآمد حاصل از صادرات نفت ایران در سال ۲۰۱۳ به ۶۱. ۹۲ میلیارد دلار رسیده که نسبت به ۱۱۴. ۷۵ میلیارد در سال ۲۰۱۱ به میزان ۴۶ درصد کاهش داشته است.
تحریم‌های بین‌المللی که فروش نفت ایران در اتحادیه اروپا را ممنوع و در آسیا محدود می‌کند، صادرات نفت این کشور را در سال ۲۰۱۳ نسبت به سال قبل ۴۲ درصد کاهش داده است. با این‌که فروش نفت در سال ۲۰۱۲ نیز کاهش یافته بود، اما این کاهش حجم به میزان زیادی با قیمت‌های بالای نفت جبران شده بود.
دیپلمات‌ها با تمدید چهارماهه مهلت دستیابی به توافق جامع با ایران، بر سر برنامه هسته‌ای این کشور، موافقت کرده‌اند.
آمریکا می‌گوید، ۲. ۸ میلیارد دلار از دارایی‌های ایران را، در عوض تبدیل تدریجی ذخیره اورانیوم ۲۰ درصدی به سوخت، آزاد خواهد کرد.
هدف از این مذاکرات این بود که ایران متقاعد شود، برنامه هسته‌ای خود را در عوض برداشته شدن تحریم‌ها محدود کند. قدرت‌های جهانی ظنین هستند که ایران به دنبال ساخت سلاح هسته‌ای است که ایران این موضوع را رد می‌کند.
ایران اصرار دارد که غنی‌سازی اورانیوم را برای استفاده در نیروگاه‌های تولید برق و مصارف پزشکی انجام می‌دهد.
رویترز گزارش می‌دهد که دور بعدی مذاکرات ماه سپتامبر انجام می‌شود و مهلت نهایی 24 نوامبر خواهد بود.
محمدجواد ظریف وزیر امور خارجه ایران و کاترین اشتون رئیس سیاست خارجی اتحادیه اروپا در بیانیه مشترکی گفتند: «هنوز شکاف‌های بزرگی در مورد برخی از موضوعات اصلی باقی مانده که زمان و تلاش بیشتری را می‌طلبد.»
